Cardiovascular System Diseases, Symptoms and Treatments


Cardiovascular diseases are diseases that affect primarily, the heart and blood vessels. They are usually as a result of the narrowing of blood vessels, build up of fat around the cardiac muscles, and aging. According to WHO, Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. It is estimated that about 23.6million will die from cardiovascular disease by 2030. Research has shown the major causes of cardiovascular disease to be lack of proper physical exercise, unhealthy diet, and tobacco use, among others.


Cardiovascular diseases include;

  • Coronary heart disease (Angina)
  • Hypertension
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Carditis
  • Peripheral Heart Disease
  • Congenital Heart Disease
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Heart failure


 Common Symptoms Of Cardiovascular Disease are;

  • Chest pain
  • Numbness or weakness in some parts of the body
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular heartbeat. 
  • In some cases, the symptoms are silent- you may
  • never know until you have a heart attack or stroke.



Heart Disease Prevention

  1. Avoid saturated fats and high sugar intake (high levels of sugar have been associated with hypertension).

  2.  Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits.

  3. Avoid high intake of salt.

  4. Exercise regularly.

  5. Avoid tobacco use


 How to Treat Cardiovascular Diseases With Herbal Remedies


         Medical experts have found some herbs to be very helpful in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

         Some of these herbs are:

  1. Hawthorn berries: Hawthorn berries contain antioxidants such as bioflavonoids and phytonutrients which are very useful for combating cardiovascular diseases. In ancient Asia, long before the advent of orthodox medicine, hawthorn berries were used as a means of treating heart diseases. Though the leaves and flower of the Hawthorn plant also contain antioxidants, Hawthorn berries seem to be the most widely used for treating CVD’s like Angina, hypertension and heart failure. The berries have also been found to be useful for treating indigestion, anxiety and generally boosting the immune system.


  1. CoQ10: Normally produced within the body, Coenzyme10 contains Ubiquinol, a powerful antioxidant that acts as a cardiovascular protector by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart failure. Vegetables, fruits and certain foods like fatty fish and organ meats like heart and liver are rich in CoQ10.   


  1. Turmeric: Turmeric contains Curcumin, which functions as an antioxidant as well as an anti-inflammatory agent, helps in preventing heart attacks and reducing the risk of heart failure. It can be used as a supplement to other cardiovascular therapies.


  1. Hibiscus: The Hibiscus flower usually boiled and taken as tea, originated from North Africa and southeastern Asia. It is known for its high anthocyanins content, which can be very beneficial to the health of the heart. It helps in the improvement of high blood pressure, and reduces cholesterol level and inflammatory problems. It also helps speed up metabolism in the body.


  1. Ginger: The active ingredient in ginger - Gingerol, has received a lot of attention lately for its prospective tendency to treat cardiovascular diseases. Commonly used as a spice, ginger has been found to lower blood pressure, facilitate vasodilatation and carry out anti-inflammatory functions, thereby reducing the risk of a heart attack.


  1. Nettle leaves and root: Native to Africa and Europe, the Nettle plant contains antioxidants which help improve blood circulation, boost the immune system and lower blood pressure in the body. It is usually taken as a beverage, and is also useful for treating muscular contractions because of its anti-inflammatory properties.


  1. L-Arginine: Usually produced within the body, L-Arginine improves dilation of blood vessels; helps sustain the immune system and hormone balance in the body. It is also present in many types of food such as red meat, grains and dairy products.


  1.  L-Citrulline: Certain studies have indicated L-Citrulline to be useful in the treatment of some cardiovascular diseases because of its tendency to increase blood flow, reduce high blood pressure and boost the body’s immunity. Though usually produced by the body, it is also found in lots of food like watermelon, pumpkin, and cucumbers.


  1. Cayenne pepper/Chili pepper: Cayenne pepper is native to northeastern South America and it’s very useful for fighting heart diseases. Although it is usually used as a spice, the Cayenne pepper helps reduce cholesterol, improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of a heart attack.
